I am drawn to the Sierra Nevada mountains every winter. The sweeping snow vistas and mountain rock outcroppings remind me of my childhood when I would see patterns of color, lines of trees, voluminous clouds in every shape, and a landscape of undulating waves of snow softening every outline of nature into smooth fields in every shade of white, gray and blue. While setting up to paint this rocky snow vista, the sun was beginning to set, the air was chilly with stark differences in temperature between sun and shade, the sun hit the mountain face with a yellow that inspired the whole painting. Often, this is where I begin a painting. It will be a color, shape or pattern that I find unusual or interesting, I build the character of the painting from this starting point and continue to add and subtract, making choices while leaving space for the unexpected; I like to keep a fluid, no commitment underpainting, in colors and brushstrokes that are bold and in keeping with what I feel the painting of the mountain, the snow, trees and sun, at this moment, are reveling to me. I use high quality paints from Gamblin, that have archival ingredients to keep your paintings' colors maintained and fresh. I glaze my paintings with a coat of Gamblin Damar varnish to protect them from environmental effects like fading, cracking or flaking. All my canvases are initially prepared with 2-3 coats of Gamblin Oil Ground, this ensures that the painting will not separate from canvas, as the ground is oil based as well. The sides of the painting are left white or painted a neutral gray. Each painting is wired and ready to hang and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
